Jacqueline de Ribes

On the evening of December 5, 1969, the beau mode was assembling for dinners at the most elegant tables in Paris, pre-gaming for the fancy-dress part of the year, if not the decade - Baron Alexis de Rede's "Bal Oriental." Among the most impenetrable of these preparatory gatherings was that of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, the international jet set's de facto king and queen. Dining with the elect at the Windsors' that night was couturier Oscar de la Renta. "The first course, the second course, the third course and finally the dessert arrived," de la Renta recalls, "and still Jacqueline de Ribes had not appeared. The Duke was furious!" Suddenly, the dining-room doors opened and in glided the Vicomtesse de Ribes. An exotic vision, the aristocratic beauty was swaddled from the pinnacle of her tasseled hat to the tips of her pointed slippers in a fantastically opulent Turkish disguise, ingeniously cobbled together by the Vicomtesse herself from three of her old haute couture dresses; organza lame from a remnant market; and a sable cape, acquired from an impoverished ballerina. Recalls de la Renta, "It was a show. And she was the star. No one knew like Jacqueline the power of an entrance."

Jacqueline de Ribes: The Art of Style
The Metropolitan Museum of Art
November 19, 2015 - February 21, 2016

The Costume Institute exhibition will focus on the internationally renowned style icon Countess Jacqueline de Ribes, whose originality and elegance established her as one of the most celebrated fashion personas of the twentieth century. The thematic show will feature about sixty ensembles of haute couture and ready-to-wear primarily form de Ribes's personal archive, dating from 1959 to the present. Also included will be her creations for fancy-dress balls, which she often made by cutting and cannibalizing her haute couture gowns to create nuanced expressions of her aesthetic. These, along with photographs and ephemera, will tell the story of how her interest in fashion developed over decades, from childhood "dress-up" to the epitome of international style.
A muse to haute couture designers, de Ribes had at her disposal their drapers, cutters and fitters in acknowledgement of their esteem for their taste and originality. Ultimately, she used this talent and experience to create her own successful design business, which she directed from 1982 to 1995. While the exhibition will focus on her taste and style, extensive documentation from her personal archives will illustrate the range of her professional life, including her roles as theatrical impresario, television producer, interior design and director and organizer of international charity events.

Fall Outfit Crush

This is one of the primary looks I am trying to channel this fall. In the past year, I have really become obsessed with the blazer + jeans look. Totally French chic.
In college, I lived in leggings and oversized button downs. But, since leaving the campus lifestyle, I've decided I need to wear pants. The upgrades when you reach the "real world..." :) Don't get me wrong, I love coming home from work and changing into leggings, but now, they pretty much stay in the comfort of my own home. Good things often come with upgrades (wearing pants = better style!) That said, I am still on the search for the perfect skinny black pants. I used to wear the minnie pant from J.Crew, but they stretch out really easily - a similar problem with the Winnie (J.Crew Factory) and the Pixie (Old Navy). I also find them to be just an inch or so too short, where I feel it's border-line awkward length for too cool of temps. For work, I have a couple of black trousers (J.McLaughlin, Theory, etc.), but they don't have the right "streamlined" look that I'm going for. Black denim might be the next best option, but denim doesn't always have the same "dressy" factor. I'd love to hear if you have any recommendations!
Anyways, back to the outfit...
A few weeks ago my parents treated me to this leopard clutch from Alligator Purse (the boutique I where I work on the weekends) and I just recently bought these Report black flats. I have decided I really like the ankle strap detail on flats, especially when I wear crop pants. You know how you sometimes find looks that work on you/your body type - well this look is one that is totally perfect for me! Combining my favorite details like black cropped pants (when I find the perfect pair!), a white blouse, gold earrings, Persol shades, and a blazer...well I could wear this every single day and feel like a style queen.
A lot of these pieces are a little bit pricier, but worthwhile investments, total classics that could withstand for trends for years to come!
Keep an eye on sales, for example Piperlime is having a 20% off sale this week (where I snagged the shoes). J.Crew has sales quite frequently - I actually bought my Schoolboy Blazer (Navy) this spring for $50! If you are a AAA member you receive 30% off glasses at Lenscrafters, a great place to invest on sunglasses - yes, you can buy eye ware without a prescription!
I don't frequently post outfit looks, but when I do, I want to make sure I'm being realistic about my shopping habits. Props to the girls who can go on shopping sprees, unfortunately bills, budgets, and lots of saving is my reality, so that leaves bargain shopping as the method to my madness :)
I hope you are enjoying the fall weather this week, toodles!

emanuelle alt

I have found myself filling my tumblr page with loads of street style pictures of women in straight slacks or jeans, classic button downs, and oversized blazers. I love the simplicity and timelessness of the look. As much as I enjoy buying statement pieces (cue ball gowns, tunics, party dresses, and sparkly shoes), I am really obsessing over this uniform. I mean you CAN'T go wrong!
But having a healthy dose of French chic with festive Palm Beach flair can still work, right?

I slowly began realizing that the woman in most of my tumblr "re-blogs" was Emanuelle Alt, the Editor-in-Chief of Vogue Paris. She is most celebrated for her make-up free and youthful appearance and nixing skirts and dresses for denim and her signature blazers or jackets. She is a fan of black heels, as you might gather from the images below. BUT - I see a fair amount of kitten heels in the outfits. Totally a-ok with that!

It's always fun to find new style icons. Although it might be a bit of a stretch for one person to channel both Emanuelle and Iris Apfel in a wardrobe, who said life shouldn't be a bit of a creative challenge?

Enjoy your weekend!!
