cocktail hour

The Seven Classic Cocktails Every Sophisticated Woman Should Know
The spring always puts me in a better mood and makes me think of sundresses and early evening cocktails on the patio. Everyone seems lighter, happier and more energized. Social engagements tend to be loads of fun with sunset cocktails continuing long after the moon rises, with twinkling lights and fire flies adding sparkle to the balmy air. While I can hardly tolerate the summer heat, I love those summer nights.
I don't drink even a fraction as much as I did in college - definitely a good thing in many regards - but I find, as such, that my cocktail list is far from sophisticated. My cocktails of choice include - and are limited to - white wine or a classic beer. When selecting wine, I often choose chardonnay (thanks to this wine personality quiz) and when I have a beer, I either choose Fat Tire or just a Bud Light. Fat Tire is my go-to when I am around craft brew drinkers.
When I saw this cocktail list on Veranda, it was just the perfect drink-spiration and I wanted to share with all of you. Maybe this will help you jazz up your summer cocktail order, whether or not you clink glasses weekly or just on those special nights out on the town!
Enjoy your weekend, toodles!

MOSCOW MULE
For those who always order: vodka sodas
What it's made with: vodka, ginger beer, lime juice
These drinks are what put vodka on the map here in the United States. Their bright taste - and the fact they're easy to drink - make the favorite for many, especially when they're served in their (correct) copper cup.

GIMLET
For those who always order: gin & tonics
What it's made with: gin, lime juice
Actually created for sailors as a way to prevent scurvy, the drink was later seen as an old person's cocktail - until its revitalization right about now. The drink is one part sweetened lime juice to four parts gin, so it's sweet but packs a punch. And if you're asking for limes in your G&T, consider this your new go-to.

DAIQUIRI
For those who always order: rum & cokes
What it's made with: rum, simple syrup, lime juice
Contrary to popular belief, a true daiquiri isn't anything that comes out of a frozen slushy machine. A shaken cocktail made with rum, lime juice and simple syrup, the drink was often served in a frosted glass or over crushed ice. The more modern take is to serve it straight up in a cocktail glass.

FRENCH 75
For those who always order: champagne
What it's made with: gin, sparkling wine/champagne, sugar/simple sugar, lemon (or other citrus)
This drink was made in 1915 in New York (happy 100th birthday!) and we really don't know what to say, other than look at the ingredients. Gin and champagne?! Be still our hearts.

THE PALOMA
For those who always order: margaritas
What it's made with: tequila, grapefruit, club soda
Refreshing, tequila-based, and easy to make - this is the best alternative to ordering a margarita. Just don't ask if it comes in frozen.

TOM COLLINS
For those who always order: gin and sodas
What it's made with: gin, lemon juice, sugar, soda
A Tom Collins is a reminiscent of spiking lemonade with gin - not that that is a bad thing. It's honestly the easiest way to add some interest to your gin & soda order...and all bartenders should learn how to make them; otherwise run far, far away.

SIDECAR
For those who always order: whiskey gingers
What it's made with: cognac, orange liqueur (triple sec), lemon juice
The sidecar came to prominence in the 1950s, and while whiskeys and cognacs are completely different spirits, they both fermet in a barrel and both tend to be a bit smoky in flavor. That, mixed with the sweetness of the triple sec and lemon, makes for a good strong drink.

It's A Lilly Party - And You're Invited!

There have been a number of times in my life where I truly think attending Lilly Pulitzer parties was my calling - or at least I should have been born in a generation where it could have been.
I mean face-it, how many people would turn down invitations to twirl in colorful shift dresses with dashing gents; sip champagne from jewel tone flutes served by cheerful monkeys; join giraffes lounging poolside; clink sweet dessert dishes amongst flamingo decor; host delightful tea parties with the french doors open wide...
The spot by Target is just perfect....save for the fact they could have found a different male celeb than Christopher Noth... Anyways, after swaying along to "keep it coming love"enjoy a few snapshots of the authentic 'Lilly bash.'

Happy Halloween - party time!

Enjoy these helpful reminders from entertainer Diane Gottsman when throwing a monster bash!

 via
A beautiful illustration from pve design.

Start with the perfect invitation
From e-vite to hand delivered card, invitations are a great way to let everyone know what type of fun to expect. Make sure and include all of the information guests will need. You don’t want to leave your guests questioning if they should or should not dress up in costume.
Be clear about the kids.
When you are making your guest list, do a “kid count”. If you come up with a large number of little goblins, consider having a kid friendly party to make it easier for parents to attend. With interactive games, yummy treats, great party favors, and a fun neighborhood chaperone (a.k.a. responsible high school students supervising the children in order to make some extra cash), the children won’t want to leave.
Good taste and smart judgment.
Choose your costume and decorations based on who is on your guest list. Kids may be frightened by the sight of fake blood and spooky ghosts and your boss may not appreciate your choice of French maid costume
Clare's PSA - the 'skank' factor is my least favorite part of Halloween.
Make good choices, keep it classy or creative, and respect yourself & others!
Download music to your iPod – not just scary noise.
Limiting the party to spooky background noise will start to drain the energy out of the celebration. Once the mood is in full swing, mix it up with great dance music. Make sure to open up space in your living room for people to move freely without knocking over your lamps and picture frames.
Set lighting carefully.
Make sure there is appropriate lighting in the parts of the house with high traffic. The restroom, kitchen or spare bedroom where coats and purses are kept will need to be adequately lit. You don’t want your guests feeling as if they are in a dark, haunted house.
Finger food.
When hosting a Halloween party it’s important to offer food more substantial than candy and sugary treats.
Halloween games.
Incorporating games into the evening is a great way to involve guests in conversation and encourage new friendships. Make sure to organize it before hand and have concise directions; nothing kills a party game faster than a confused and bored guest.
Don’t forget the Trick-or-Treaters.
If you are doing something at home, you don’t want to ignore the doorbell. Since your house is decorated and the lights are on, people will assume that you are offering candy. Enlist a high school neighbor to help hand out treats, or leave a cute sign by a basket or cauldron full of candy saying, “Excuse our absence, ghoulish party underway: Please help yourself to one handful of candy.” Leave a bag of candy inside close to the front door allowing you to easily replenish the basket throughout the evening.
Party Favors.
When it’s time to say goodbye, send your guests home with a cute goodie bag to remember the night.
Relax and have fun.
It’s your party and you should enjoy it as much as your ghoulish guests! Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween, toodles!

christmas party

I threw a little Christmas party last night. It was a small gathering with friends, many who I haven't seen in a long time. Since graduating from college and entering the grown-up world, it has taken some adjustment to join the social world. To be blunt, sometimes I feel like it would be just wonderful to have a fraction of the social life I had in college! Although I am happy with this new phase of life, I miss the festive nature in gathering with friends, having parties, and attending other events that seemed effortless in school. I haven't been out too much in the Cincinnati scene, with working six days a week between the PR firm M-F and then the boutique on the weekend, sometimes all I want to do is relax at home. And, hangovers are 1000x worst when you're 22. Taylor Swift should have wrote about that in her song...
Anyways, I decided to start small with what I do best. Put on some tunes, pop the champagne, cue the lights, and let conversation, stories, and laughter flow.
In true Christmas spirit, I was happy to let all of our holiday decorations steal the spotlight and be enjoyed by the company. As for food, I am not a culinary queen, by any stretch, so a quick stop at the grocery store to get crackers, cheese, summer sausage, humus, fruits, veggies, and cookies was sufficient. I offered white and red wine and made a signature cocktail which was a HIT for the evening.

Here's the recipe for the most perfect holiday punch:
6 cups of cranberry juice
2 cups of freshly squeezed orange juice
1/2 cup of freshly squeezed lemon juice
2 bottles of champagne

Mix the juices together in a large punch bowl and add the champagne last. For a festive touch, cut up an orange to add the slices into the drink. The recipe serves 20.

Of course, I had to give this outfit another go, and sported my most favorite holiday necklace EVER. Let me know if you have attended any fun holiday gatherings over the past few weeks. Do you have any favorite recipes, drinks, or outfits you'd like to share?

I hope you are all enjoying the holiday season because it truly is the most wonderful time of the year, merry, merry & toodles!

AND, there are still a couple of days before Christmas...plenty of time for a party! See the playlist below for your perfect party tunes, in case this list didn't suffice earlier this month :)

Holiday Gala

Although I don't have any grand and glorious plans for the weekend, a girl can dream! I'd love to be playing dress up in this outfit....and I don't think I am the only who will be sharing the dream. How beautiful is this ensemble?! A glamorous party skirt, festive shoes, and plenty of pizazz.
I have probably far more taffeta party skirts than the average person needs to have...pink, black, gold...but I think it's such a fabulous way to dress up.
Create a classic silhouette in a black turtleneck (because baby it IS cold outside)
Add a color pop in the shoes (although Bean Boots are more than chic for getting you there)
Play around with your favorite jewels and accessories.
What are your favorite pieces to wear during the holidays?

Christmas sounds from Anthropologie

It's time for the Christmas music! Even though some radio stations have been playing holiday music since Halloween, I think the official start of jingle bells begins at the dawning of December.
See the below playlist for the perfect mix of holiday carols, courtesy of Anthropologie's holiday playlist a couple of years ago. With the perfect blend of old favorites and new hits, this list will appeal to all audiences!
AND...I think this might be the perfect excuse to throw a holiday cocktail party. In my book, all it takes is a good playlist and a plenty of drinks to go around. Spike the punch and have a champagne Kris Kringle. I am sure the festive spirits and holiday tunes will keep people mingling all night long.

A Thanksgiving Playlist

Well, isn't this just wonderful?! I adore this playlist that I came across on the lovely Pinterest...my little pinned it! I am not a culinary queen, but I can be the queen of a playlist every once in awhile. And this is just the bee's knees...or should I say turkey's feathers!
We won't be cooking this year, instead we'll be spending Thanksgiving in DC with my dad's family. Everyone will get a break from the kitchen, as we are planning to celebrate at the University Club. Perhaps a hostess might be reading this and gain some inspiration for the perfect background music!

This week marks my third year blogging, my how time flies!
I am so grateful today for my family, friends, and readers ...
From my thankful and appreciative heart, to all of yours.
Happy Thanksgiving holiday!!

One of those nights!

I see November as the kick-off to the holiday season. It's time for cocktails, party dresses, laughter, and celebration. I think this collection of images captures both the glamorous and playful side of entertaining so perfectly, because frankly no party is fun without without a fabulous outfit and delightful conversation.
Here's to the party season, toddles!

pool party

What perfect weekend inspiration for the summer!
Dreaming of a pool party tonight, in a version of these fabulous looks, taking poolside chic to the next level.
All will be perfect if I stay standing; although if I looked as great being pushed in the pool as the lady below...I might just tolerate a little late night unexpected splash.

Happy weekend, toodles!

What's Playing: Capital Cities

Capital Cities just came out with a new album and I am LOVING it.
The pop band is based out of LA. I love their upbeat music and clever lyrics. It's the perfect rhythm for the summer months. Put the album on for an patio cocktail party, I would recommend margaritas as the beverage for the evening.

The video below is my favorite song on their album.

Check THIS New York Times article for more information on the album available June 4th.

Memorial Day Weekend

I thought these spreads captured by the Kiel James Patrick brand, including a "kick off to summer" video, were perfect inspiration for the weekend.
The lifestyle line is frequently a source for many of my blog themes as it balances youthful and celebratory playfulness with an element of classic and traditional preppiness.

Check out more about Kiel James Patrick, Sarah Vickers & crew

Wishing you a blessed and appreciative Memorial Day Weekend & an unofficial welcome to summer!
Toodles!

Life Lately

I will probably be off the radar for a couple of days thanks to my wisdom teeth surgery this morning.
So while I am conked out on my bed, you can take a peek at my life the past couple of weeks.

I graduated OWU in December, but wanted to take part in the spring commencement ceremony. I came back to school for the last week of school to catch-up with friends and I had a tremendous time. Between celebrating birthdays, DJing at the bar, walking dogs, graduation party hopping, and taking part in Great Strides on behalf of cystic fibrosis; I was able to reflect on the wonderful time I had at OWU and the friendships I made throughout the past four years.

I am so grateful I spent time up at school prior to graduation because it gave me the opportunity to reconnect with people who have truly made an impact in my life. It was comforting to come back to school after not seeing friends for months (some of them even a year) and have things pick-up like it was just yesterday since we had seen each other. In addition to reaffirming friendships, I was able to meet and engage with people I might not have known too well before. There are a couple of people that I had fantastic conversations with and I feel both blessed to have met them and confident that the relationships will continue. I have met people who will be lifelong friends and I look forward to the many memories in the years to come!

Now with sentiments aside, here's a sampling of my week:
(in case you can't tell...I got my fair share of cardio dancing in!)
