City Chic in London

I am so happy to have Alice, a blog-o-sphere friend, back on the blog today. She wrote a great post last month on the maxi dress as once again being the look of the summer. Now, she gives us some tips on how all the girls across the pond stay chic and stylish in the heat.

Enjoy!

Chic in the city
If you walk down the streets of London you will be blind sighted by beautiful women wearing elegant clothing, which looks fantastic with their glossy hair and stylish accessories.
But the question which I always ask myself, how do these women manage to look so good?
Mollie King from the Saturdays is my ultimate idol in regards to her fantastic taste in clothes and stylish appearance. But what you see from Mollie's clothing is ultimately things the normal girl can go and buy from the high street.
Being fashionable doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune, and in Mollie's case, her outfits are predominantly high street based, making her the ultimate chic in the city.

Accessorize
A pair of stylish sunglasses, a cute bag and a pair of on trend pumps or sandals immediately creates an illusion that you have the fashionable edge, and luckily for us girls, these can be worn with almost anything! I have always been a big fan of accessories as they can completely change the look of one outfit, and turn it into something completely different. A great example is the belt which Mollie King is wearing in this photo, (below) the belt matches with the shoes and bag, and ultimately ties the whole piece together.

Just remember it doesn’t need to cost to be on trend, the important thing to know is how to accessorize correctly and you will be a style queen in no time.

Vivian Maier

The secret photographer of the streets.

Maier, born in the United States and raised in France, was a quiet, private, and fascinatingly deceptive character. In the early 1950s, Maier returned to the United States where she began photographing people throughout the streets of New York. After a couple of years, she moved west, to Chicago. In the mid-western capital, she spent many years as a nanny. She spent her free moments and leisure time exploring the streets, snapping photo after photo. Her hobby and talent were never known by her friends and close companions until a discovery in 2007.
Maier fell into financial hardship, prompting the children who she cared for, to return the favor. The children chipped together to give their beloved nanny an apartment, caring for her up through her final days. In 2007, a storage locker of Maier's was auctioned off, since she had been delinquent in payments. Inside the locker was a vast and timeless collection of her film negatives. Over five decades of work (100,000 negatives) have been treated as national treasure. Her photographs are being archived and shared with the rest of the world, as they capture and portray both a raw and authentic reflection of the 20th century.

The Sun & Earth

I took a yoga class yesterday morning which concluded with the poem written below. The simplicity of the poem combined with its fundamentally practical and important message, resonated deeply with me. I wanted to share it with all of you.
Here's to continuing to try and "light up the sky".

The Sun Never Says

Even after all this time
The sun never says to the earth,
“You owe Me.”

Look what happens with
A love like that,
It lights the Whole Sky.

Ferragamo Bows

One day I will be treating myself to a pair of these flats.
There are a few things in life (Burberry trench, Hermes scarf, Barbour jacket, etc.) that are luxurious wardrobe staples. Depending on how hard I work, I would love to be able to build a collection of these items in the decades to come.
Ferragamo is celebrating 35 years of the Vera, the traditionally chic pump. In honor of the milestone, Ferragamo filmed a beautiful video capturing women around the world wearing the shoe.

My favorite:

I should probably start a piggy bank ferragamo fund soon....

Jenna Lyons

This decades's hottest style icon is J.Crew creative director, Jenna Lyons. Named one of the 100 Most Influential People of the Year by Time Magazine, she is cited as a "tastemaker". Working with J.Crew for over 20 years, starting as an intern, she has made her way up the ladder, bringing the success of the brand with her. Women and men of all ages shop at J.Crew as it provides the foundations pieces for those with a true sense of style.
Lyons, in her tall, lanky frame is known for blending wild bottoms with simple and basic tops. She is rarely seen without a pair of fabulous thick rimmed glasses, bringing nerdy chic eye ware to the fashion pages. Always wearing J.Crew, she brings her style to the collections...inspiring women on how they can make the pieces their own or distinctly "Jenna".

Additionally, Fast Company magazine featured Jenna Lyons in their publication last month. Read more about her work with J.Crew HERE.

Take a peek at some of my favorite looks from her, you can see more of her fashions by reading THIS article on her 20 best outfits.

punchy print feat: Sheridan French

Sheridan French is one of my favorite designers and nothing seems to be saying summer more to me than her festive prints! I adore the rich color in this tunic-style dress especially with the gold details along the collar. I would pair the outfit with a little sapphire blue clutch/shoulder bag as a dynamic contrast to the bright hues in the dress. Classic hoops, a dramatic gold ring, and summer staple Jack Rogers would comprise the rest of the outfit. Make sure you have a proper pop of pink on the lips and lather those legs in your favorite lotion!

Iris Apfel at the Zoo

I have always adored and admired Iris Apfel. She appears to have an amazing spirit, seeming to celebrate life in such a wondrous manner. AND talk about a wardrobe! When I came across this short video of Iris being interviewed, I was incredibly impressed. I would LOVE for all of you to take a couple of minutes and watch it. She's just incredible.

piano man

This weekend I started reading, The Gershwins and Me by Michael Feinstein. A much loved admirer captures the life, talent, and songs of one of music's greatest duos. Feinstein writes that very few pianists had the natural talent of George Gershwin. Yes, there are so many famous pianists...but George had a swiftness, "an ease that was maddening to his contemporaries...his creation was more organic than many and he had the rare gift of musical assurance and knowing when something was right". He was not only a musician who worked faster than his brother (Ira) could write the words, but he could nail a melody in one try! His sixth sense introduced a completely new wave in music and with the combination of Ira's lyrics, it combined history with contemporary vibes...still impacting the musical world today. Needless to say, the book on my nightstand has truly cast my inspiration for the day!

Tony Time!

The Tony Awards have always been my favorite out of the "top tier" award shows. Maybe it's the theatre minor in me, but I have so much fun watching the annual gala. How can you not love the entertainment with singing, acting, and performing? It's like I am going to a Broadway show taking place in my living room! This year has proven to be a strong one in the performing arts world and Neil Patrick Harris will once again take the ropes in recognizing theatre's greats this Sunday evening.
Will you be watching??

Visit the New York Times' Tony Ballot for more information on the nominees and a ballot for you to predict the winners in each category.

If you haven't really kept up on what's been happening on Broadway this past year...all you need to know if children were the inspiration this year! Some of the top works up for awards include: Matilda, CinderellaA Christmas Story, and Bring It On.
Aside from the childhood delights, Cindy Lauper's compositions appear in Kinky Boots, which has been a shocking hit.

Skim through some of these articles in the New York Times to give you more background info!

skinny-dip swim!

After posting about my favorite summer swim-suits early this week, it was quite coincidental that I came across the following article. CNN researched the 22 BEST places to take a skinny dip. So, even though you have a killer swim suit, you just might have to shed it when traveling to any of these destinations.
Have you ever been skinning dipping? Save for a quick dip after a long hike in Nova Scotia with my cousins about a decade ago, I have stayed clear of the nude. Although, there is something quite intriguing about being a "little rebellious" every now and again.

splash-in lust list

I am swooning over this array of swim suits. If you don't find at least one of these options below to fancy your taste, then I might demand you to relocate as far away from the sun bathing circuit as possible! I have been a one-piece lover the past couple of years, but I am adoring the two-piece picks below as well. With so many style, color, and pattern options, it's a "can't go wrong" pick for your favorite. Now, if only the prices were as short as the hemlines...

Dive in & see you poolside, toodles!
